Eat British Lion Eggs with Confidence in National Food Safety Week

As National Food Safety Week approaches (11-17 June 2001), the future for British eggs looks brighter than ever with a recent Government report confirming the success of the Lion Quality vaccination programme in overcoming salmonella in eggs.

The report of the Advisory Committee on the Microbiological Safety of Food (ACMSF) shows that human cases of salmonella in England and Wales have more than halved in three years, following the introduction of the Lion Code of Practice salmonella eradication programme, and are now at their lowest levels since 1985.

"The Lion Quality scheme is the one good news story for UK agriculture," says Andrew Parker, Chairman of the British Egg Industry Council (BEIC).

"More than 80,000 Lion Quality eggs were independently tested last year and all were free of salmonella. Not only have we beaten salmonella, but increased consumer confidence means that egg sales are also now rising."

As well as vaccination of hens against salmonella, the Lion Quality Code of Practice means that eggs have a Lion Quality mark and a best-before date stamped on the egg shell and box for maximum freshness and are completely traceable back to the laying flock.

Lion Quality eggs represent around 75% of the eggs produced in the UK and are available in all major UK supermarkets and other reputable outlets.
