Egg Information On-Line For Health Professionals
From March 2001, health professionals can access the latest information on nutrition and eggs via a new specialist nutrition website from the British Egg Information Service (BEIS).
Available at www.nutritionandeggs.org, the site is designed for health professionals including: nurses, dietitians, health visitors, community workers and general practitioners. The website will provide further backup to the existing information services provided by BEIS, and will be regularly updated to help health professionals deal more effectively with their patients.
The site will cover a wide range of topics including: cholesterol information for patients, the nutritional composition of eggs and food safety advice. A section on nutritional research, including abstracts from relevant scientific papers, will also provide health professionals with up-to-the-minute advice and recommendations.
Andrew Parker, Chairman of the British Egg Industry Council said: "Written for health professionals, the website will dispel the myths around the relationship between diet and cardiovascular disease. In particular, we now know that there is little scientific data supporting cardiovascular disease risk reduction with dietary cholesterol restrictions. Therefore the restriction of foods containing cholesterol is not justified.
"This is especially true for foods such as eggs which, while containing dietary cholesterol, are low in saturated fat and therefore present little disease risk for most of the population. This new site will arm health professionals with information that empowers them to speak authoritatively to their patients. We can also provide leaflets to hand out during clinics."
